The best Git GUI clients in 2026: an honest field guide

Disclosure, up front: I build GitWand, one of the nine clients below. That's a reason to read this sceptically, so I've tried to earn it back — every tool gets a plain statement of what it's better at than mine, prices come from vendor pages checked in August 2026, and anything I couldn't verify is marked as unverified rather than rounded into a claim. If you find something wrong, open an issue and I'll fix it.

There is no "best Git client". There is a best client for the thing you keep getting stuck on. So this guide is organised by that, not by a score.

GitHub Desktop

Who it's for: anyone whose Git anxiety is still real, and anyone whose repos all live on GitHub.

Free, MIT-licensed, and the only client on this list whose explicit design goal is to hide Git. Clone, branch, commit, push, open a PR — the surface is small enough that you can't get lost in it. For a designer, a technical writer, or a first-year student, that constraint is the feature, and no amount of graph rendering elsewhere beats it.

Where it stops: it's GitHub-only in practice, the diff viewer is basic, there's no interactive rebase, and full in-app PR review still isn't there — the request has been open for years. Linux users need an unofficial community fork. It's Electron, which you'll notice on a large repo.

Fork

Who it's for: developers who want a fast native client, will pay once, and never want to think about it again.

$59.99, one-time, both platforms, evaluate before you buy — a pricing model that has quietly become rare. Fork is genuinely quick, the interface stays out of the way, interactive rebase and worktrees are there, and the whole thing feels like software rather than a subscription.

Where it stops: no Linux build, and none announced. PR support is create-and-view rather than review. And you're trusting a very small team with a closed codebase — fine for most people, a non-starter for some.

Sublime Merge

Who it's for: people for whom "fast" is not a feature but a requirement, and who want to see the actual Git commands.

$99, perpetual, three years of updates included, Linux supported. Built on the same custom toolkit as Sublime Text, and it shows: on a repository where other clients think, Sublime Merge has already drawn. Its best idea is the command log — every action it takes is shown as the Git command it ran, which makes it the only client on this list that actively teaches you Git while you use it.

Where it stops: no pull-request workflow at all, no AI anything, and development is deliberate to the point of quiet — the last headline release announcement is some years old now. If you want a client that grows features, this isn't it. If you want one that still opens instantly in 2030, it might be exactly it.

Tower

Who it's for: professionals who want the most finished product and will pay yearly for it.

$69/yr Basic, $129/yr Pro, 30-day trial, free for students. Tower has been doing this since before most of this list existed, and the maturity shows in the small things — a real undo for destructive operations, conflict tooling that doesn't panic, a pull-request manager included from the base tier. Tower 16 (May 2026) added AI commit-message generation, notably by delegating to Claude Code and OpenAI Codex rather than shipping its own cloud model.

Where it stops: macOS and Windows only, subscription-only with no free tier, and the price compounds — three years of Pro costs about four times Sublime Merge's perpetual licence.

GitKraken

Who it's for: teams that want one vendor for the client, the issue board, the terminal integration and the AI, and have a budget line for it.

The free Community tier covers local repos and public remotes; private remotes and the interesting features are paid. GitKraken restructured its plans in 2026 — Pro sits in the $8–10/mo range and a new "Advanced" tier appeared above it. I could not verify the exact current figures: the pricing page renders client-side and third-party trackers disagree, though they agree an increase happened around July 2026. Check it yourself before budgeting.

Its conflict story is worth naming precisely, because it's the closest thing to a competitor for what I build: GitKraken AI proposes fixes for conflicted hunks with an explanation and a confidence level, on paid tiers, metered by AI credits. That is a model making a suggestion, not a rule proving an answer — a real distinction when the output is going into your history.

Where it stops: Electron, an account is required for most of it, and the free tier's private-repo restriction surprises people. But the graph is still the best-looking one in the category, and the multi-forge PR support on higher tiers is genuinely broad.

GitButler

Who it's for: developers who are always halfway through three things at once.

Free, source-available under FSL-1.1-MIT (each release becomes MIT two years later), Tauri + Rust + Svelte, all three platforms. Its virtual branches let uncommitted work sit in several branches simultaneously and be committed to the right one afterwards — the most interesting new idea in Git tooling in years, and it does reduce how often you conflict with yourself. Version 0.22 (August 2026) added native GitHub stacked PRs, and the company raised a $17M Series A in April 2026, so the pace isn't slowing.

Where it stops: the paradigm is the price of admission — if your team's workflow is classic branch-per-task, you're paying a conceptual tax for a benefit you may not need. And reducing self-inflicted conflicts doesn't help with the ones that come from other people's merges.

Lazygit and gitui

Who they're for: people who already know Git and just want fewer keystrokes.

Both free and MIT. Lazygit (Go) is the more featureful and the more actively developed; gitui (Rust) is leaner and faster on very large repositories, and moved to a community organisation in 2026. Neither is a GUI in the usual sense, and that's the point: they live in the terminal you already have open, over SSH, in a container, wherever.

Where they stop: no forge integration, no PR review, and a merge conflict in a terminal UI is still a merge conflict.

Sourcetree

Who it's for: Bitbucket-centric teams, and people who have used it for a decade.

Free, from Atlassian, macOS and Windows. It's still competent, still free, and still the path of least resistance if your work lives in Bitbucket.

A caveat, stated carefully: there is no official discontinuation announcement, and I want to be precise about that rather than repeat a rumour. What is verifiable is that Bitbucket's app-password deprecation in mid-2026 has broken authentication for some users, and that community threads about slow support have grown. Draw your own conclusions; don't take mine.

GitWand

Who it's for: people who lose real time to merge conflicts — monorepos, long-lived branches, teams where two people touch the same files, and increasingly, anyone whose coding agent keeps landing in a rebase.

Free, MIT, Tauri 2 + Rust, about 8 MB, all three platforms, no account. It does the daily workflow every client here does — changes, history, branches, interactive rebase, worktrees, in-app PR review across GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket and Azure DevOps.

The reason it exists is the next paragraph.

The thing almost none of them do

Look back at the list. Nine clients, and on merge conflicts every one of them does the same thing: shows you the conflict beautifully, then waits. GitKraken will have a model suggest something. The rest hand you three panes and good luck.

That's strange, because if you replay a few thousand real merges — which we did, and the runner is in the repo — most conflicted hunks turn out not to be decisions at all. Both sides made the identical edit. Only one side actually changed anything inside the conflict region. The same lines came back reordered. Two imports landed at the same boundary. A version string moved on both sides. Git flags them because it compares lines and cannot tell the difference.

GitWand classifies every conflicted hunk against a prioritised registry — 8 patterns auto-apply, 12 exist in total — and resolves the ones where there is provably nothing to decide, each with a confidence score and a decision trace you can audit. Lockfiles, JSON, YAML, TypeScript import blocks and Vue SFCs get structural resolvers rather than line diffing. What's genuinely ambiguous comes back to you, unresolved and explained. No model guesses at your code; the LLM fallback exists, is opt-in, and is labelled wherever it fires.

Where it stops, honestly: it's younger than everything else here except GitButler. It has no virtual or stacked branches. Sublime Merge is still faster on a repository with a million commits. And if you rarely hit conflicts, the reason to switch mostly evaporates — Fork or Sublime Merge are excellent, and I'd tell you so.

How to actually choose

  • You're new to Git → GitHub Desktop, and don't let anyone make you feel bad about it.
  • You want fast and finished, and you'll pay once → Fork, or Sublime Merge if you need Linux or want to see the commands.
  • You want the most polished paid product → Tower.
  • You want one vendor for everything, with a budget → GitKraken.
  • You juggle several changes at once → GitButler.
  • You live in the terminal → Lazygit.
  • You lose hours a month to conflicts and rebasesGitWand, which is what it was built for.
